Some of the nation’s meat producing plants have been shut down because workers have gotten sick from the coronavirus. That led lots of people to flock to grocery stores to buy up large amounts of meat.
In Escanaba, Elmer’s County Market co-owner Mike Dagenais says you don’t need to do that, as his meat manager, John Hendrickson, has plenty of supply coming into the store.
“He says we’re well-positioned for the next couple of weeks, for sure,” Dagenais told the Radio Results Network. “We’re not going to do any gouging. He’s going to keep the prices right where they’re at. If we make a little bit less, that’s the way it is. Like when the (demand for) eggs went through the roof, I didn’t want to go above a certain price. We might not have made any money, but we’re just trying to do what we can.”
While there may be temporary shortages of a specific cut or variety of meat that you’re able to get on a given day, Dagenais says there’s multiple suppliers of meat products out there and his store will keep working to maintain a steady supply.
“You don’t have to hoard,” Dagenais said. “Like John says, plan your meals for a week. Maybe we’ll put some limits on some stuff, like I did put some limits on eggs for a while, and limits on butter, but I got to take the limits off. Buy sensible, people. You don’t have to hoard the burger, or the pork, or the chicken. Let’s try to make sure there’s enough for everyone.”
Dagenais added that he doesn’t want to see people buying overwhelming amounts of meat the way they did toilet paper and Lysol. Speaking of which, he says they recently got their first shipment of Lysol.
