The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesiday reported 1,550 new cases on Wednesday, which covers both Tuesday and Wednesday.
State officials report a negative net of two deaths over those two days.
They went through old death certificates and matched them to previous positive test results, and added 74 more deaths to the state total. But there were few, if any, new deaths over the two days.
“Of note, the daily number of deaths (72) in confirmed cases is two fewer than the number identified by vital records review (74). This is due to corrections being made to previously reported deaths during ongoing data quality and cleaning efforts by public health to ensure the accuracy of death data.”
Starting next week, when MDHHS reports on COVID deaths, they will not identify how many are new deaths and how many were found by checking older death certificates.
Here in the Upper Peninsula, one new death was reported in Delta County on Wednesday, although it’s not clear how long ago that person died.
The number of cases in the Upper Peninsula has dwindled. For Tuesday and Wednesday combined, there were 39 new cases added in the U.P., with nine of them in Houghton County and six in Menominee County.
Also starting next week, MDHHS will issue only one coronavirus report per week, on Wednesdays. The reports have been issued three times a week since last fall.
