UP Health System – Marquette has received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for the Spring 2022 measurement period. This national distinction recognizes UP Health System – Marquette’s achievements in protecting patients from harm and error in the hospital.
The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over thirty national performance measures reflecting errors, injuries, accidents, and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.
“The pandemic has brought its fair share of challenges, but one thing that has never wavered is our dedication to safety. Achieving an ‘A’ rating through Leapfrog demonstrates our commitment to high-quality patient care – built by the systems, processes, and employees of UP Health System – Marquette,” said Gar Atchison, CEO. “Together, we have created an environment focused on continuous improvement and growth. I am proud of the work our staff and providers give to our patients, visitors, and the community – they are the heart of the service we provide.”
“As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of UP Health System – Marquette for sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, president, and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An ‘A’ Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”
MyMichigan Health’s Medical Centers in Sault Ste. Marie also recently received annual safety grades for spring 2022 from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. They were given a “C” grade.
“MyMichigan Health is committed to achieving the highest levels of quality and safety for our patients, visitors and team members. While scoring and weight calculations for the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade change from one grade period to the next, we continually review best practices in patient safety to strengthen our quality and performance measures,” said David Jahn, president, MyMichigan Medical Center Sault. “Each scoring period allows us to learn through Leapfrog on how our performance compares to the best in the nation, giving us opportunity to reflect on adjustments we can make for the betterment of our patients.”
Improvements continue to be made in the Medical Center’s safety practices. MyMichigan Health has designed structures and processes for use across the health system to strengthen quality and safety measures. These include improvements in computerized physician order entry, bar code medication administration, nursing workforce, infection prevention and reducing patient complications.
“The past two years have been a challenge for everyone working in health care,” said Greg Rogers, CEO of MyMichigan Health. “I am incredibly proud of our team, who continues to keep the safety of our patients, and each other, at the center of all that they do.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
