The Marquette County Health Department has testing services available for monkeypox, an infectious disease that is spready across the country, in particular among gay men.
Medical Director Dr. Bob Lorinser says there are no monkeypox cases reported in any of the 15 Upper Peninsula counties, and there are less than 100 cases in all of Michigan.
The health department says that if you think you have been in close contact with someone who has monkeypox, you should call (906) 475-9977 to get tested. There us a vaccine available for the virus, but the supply is very limited, and people should get it within four-to-14 days of exposure. That may reduce the severity of the symptoms, which include painful lesions and sores on your skin. You can only get this vaccine through a health department, unlike the COVID vaccine, which is available at pharmacies.
