The Upper Peninsula’s unemployment rate fell to 4.3 percent in September, down from 4.8 percent in August, but remains the same (percentage-wise) as it was in September of 2021.
The Michigan Department of Technology and Budget estimates that there are 5,800 unemployed people in the U.P., which is roughly 100 more people than in September of 2021.
The lowest unemployment rate was in the tourism-reliant Mackinac County at 2.8%, followed by Menominee County at 3.7% and Dickinson County at 3.8%. The highest unemployment in the U.P. was in Ontonagon County at 6.2%, followed by Baraga County at 6% and Schoolcraft County at 5.8%.
The statewide unemployment rate in September was 3.7%, down from 4% in August and 5.2% in September of last year.
The jobless rate fell in all of Michigan’s regional labor markets except for the Upper Peninsula.
“Michigan regional labor markets exhibited typical workforce reductions during September,” said Wayne Rourke, associate director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives. “Payroll jobs advanced largely due to local schools and colleges re-opening for the fall.”
