Huskies are leveling up their snow statue prowess with a workshop presented by Sculptora Borealis, winners of the national 2022 Snow Sculpting Championship.
The public is welcome to watch the on-campus sessions, which begin on the patio at Michigan Technological University’s JR Van Pelt and Opie Library at 6 p.m. Friday evening, Jan. 6, running until 8 p.m., and continue from 9-noon and 1-6 p.m. Saturday. Sunday’s session is tentatively set for 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
The workshop with the Wisconsin-based sculpting group, which has won two national championships in a row, is sponsored by Michigan Tech’s Blue Key Honor Society — the student group composed of outstanding scholars that organizes and stages MTU’s iconic Winter Carnival, now in its 101st year, each February. Carnival 2023 takes place Feb. 8-11. Students will be constructing statues around the theme “Tasty Foods for Wintry Moods.”

Sculptora Borealis will build an eight-by-eight-by-eight-foot snow statue while teaching techniques to save time, design excellent snow suspensions, and produce incredible finishes. More than 10 students have filled the slots to work alongside the sculptors to get hands-on experience in new techniques.
