Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist was in Escanaba Friday morning, and took a tour of a new small business on Ludington Street. Beaver’s Lures was started by Katelyn Beaver, who just graduated from high school last year. Gilchrist was impressed, and even bought a couple fishing lures for his kids.

“Escanaba is part of Michigan, and I’m always proud to come to this town and the U.P. more broadly, to make sure that folks know that our administration supports every person in Michigan, in every part of Michigan,” the Detroit Democrat said. “I wanted to meet Katelyn. This great story of entrepreneurial ingenuity and success, for people who are saying ‘we had some time to think about doing something cool’ and she went out and did it.”
“Basically, two years ago, when everything was still shut down, I was still in high school, but I didn’t have school, I didn’t have work,” Beaver said. “Everything was closed. So I just started making fishing lures out of my room. And it has just kind of been taking off from there. Slowly starting to fill up the shop. I love it and it’s been a lot of fun so far.”
Gilchrist, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer, are up for re-election this fall.
Gilchrist had several more visits planned in other parts of the Upper Peninsula on Friday.
The lieutenant governor was also in the U.P. to thank the hospital workers who continue to put in long hours fighting the pandemic.
Beaver’s fishing lure business is located at 914 Ludington Street in downtown Escanaba.
