U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) delivered the commencement address at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday.
During his remarks, he highlighted the unique education graduates have received that blends technical skills with traditional liberal arts studies to develop a workforce that is well prepared to lead our state through the challenges of the future – from protecting the Great Lakes to innovation in medicine, engineering, manufacturing, and more.
“There is no question we have all been living through an extraordinary and challenging time – I know every single student here today has overcome unexpected obstacles as you worked toward achieving your goals. In the face of great uncertainty and through the ongoing challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic – you have all persevered – and that’s why we are all here today to honor you,” said Senator Peters in his address. “…We are at the dawn of one the most exciting periods in human history… As Lake State graduates, you will not only lead us through incredible technological breakthroughs, you will also be the leaders that we are absolutely counting on to help us navigate the social and cultural challenges that come with such great change.”
“Thanks to the education you received here at Lake State – you are now armed with the knowledge and the skills to lead us through this transformational change,” Peters said. “…In the years ahead, I hope that you will strive for more than just a successful career. I hope that you will take the truly one-of-a-kind education that you have received here and use it to not just solve technical or business problems – but to improve the lives of the people in your community, your state, and your country as we move through these extraordinary and life-changing times…we are all counting on you, and I have every confidence that you will make all of us proud.”
