The U.S. Coast Guard says 5,300 gallons of oil has spilled into the St. Mary’s River near Sault Ste. Marie.
The oil spilled from the Algoma Steel Mill on the Canadian side of the border, and it led to the shutdown of the Soo Locks. The sheen of oil stretched all the way to the north side of Sugar Island. The incident was reported at around 10:30 in the morning. By mid-afternoon, the Locks had re-opened to commercial traffic.
