Registration is now open for the 12th Annual Lyle “Chummy” McDonald Memorial Hockey Tournament.
The tournament will be held March 24 – 26 at the Community REC Center in Marinette. This event is the only fundraiser for the Lyle “Chummy” McDonald Memorial Fund, which is held at the M&M Area Community Foundation (MMACF). The goal of the Fund is to help offset registration costs for new or current youth players in need of financial assistance.
The Memorial Fund also awards grants for a Thunder student-athlete to attend Michigan Tech’s Summer Hockey Camp. With the help of generous community support, the McDonald Fund has awarded nearly $26,000.
Lyle worked and lived in the Menominee/Marinette area for over 30 years. After serving in the Marine Corps and graduating from Michigan Tech, Lyle moved to Menominee. He became involved with M & M youth hockey, coaching various levels from Mites to High School. After Lyle and his wife Nancy started a family, their children also became involved in M & M hockey.
The tournament has a unique structure started years ago by the participants themselves. Players register individually and then are “drafted” onto teams. These players face off on teams that are structured around families, past teammates, and the local men’s league team. A popular highlight of the weekend is the Saturday night Alumni game.
Player registration fee is $60 and is due no later than March 1. All registrations this year must be completed online at tinyurl.com/chummytourney. A complete list of rosters and the game schedule can be found on the Lyle “Chummy” McDonald Memorial Hockey Tournament Face Book page approximately one week prior to the start of the tournament
Organizers are seeking items for their bucket raffle as well as Sponsors for the tournament. Business and community members interested in donating to the bucket raffle or in becoming a Sponsor should contact Nancy McDonald at 715-587-7456.
The Memorial Fund was established at the MMACF in 2010 by Chummy’s family. Donations may be made to the Fund, regardless of participation in the hockey tournament. Checks may be mailed to the Foundation at 1110 10th Avenue, Suite L-1, Menominee, MI 49858 or made online at www.mmacf.org.
